Top 5 : Albums of the year

2015 was a rough year all around the world. Catastrophes, terrorism, Donald Trump, refugees, and no matter the gods, you pray they will all carry on in 2016.

However, despite this despair 2015 in music was great, Adele came back with "25", One Direction took a break, Bieber gave us THE album. The kind of album that made him cool within the NME indie kids community, and that's an accomplishment. And as lovers of music, we were there to witness all of this and so much more. So here's our top 5 albums of the year!

Elena's top 5:

My Love Is Cool: Wolf Alice

This is with no doubt the album I was waiting for the more this year and I wasn’t disappointed. The band exceeded themselves during the creation of their first LP, delivering us 12 tracks all different from one another but all as beautiful. We go from sweet ballads, who are putting forward Ellie’s angel voice such as Turn To Dust, to many more entertaining songs which are even better live like You’re A Germ. But the masterpiece of this album is the wonderful Silk, which still leave me speechless 6 months later.

Sometimes I Sit and I Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit: Courtney Barret

The Australian singer-songwriter has one of the most quoted albums in the multiplied top that we can see at the end of this year. Courtney Barnett is delivering us a well written album accompanied with guitar chords which make very lovely rock ballads.

A Dream Oustide: Gengahr

The four British from Gengahr also dropped one of the most outstanding albums of the year. Very faithful to their universe, A Dream Outside is the continuity of their past EPs. We still discover gripping lyrics, which fit perfectly with the enchanting guitar tunes.

Man It Feels Like Space Again: Pond

I discovered Pond last year on stage at a festival and it was by far one of the best set I’ve seen that week-end. I discovered a crazy band with electric guitars in their hands. Tame Impala’s cousins delivered us a psychedelic rock album, which is one of my best discover of the year.

Anthem for Doomed Youth: The Libertines

The least I can say about this album is that The Libertines definitely made a brilliant comeback. Anthem for  Doomed Youth features songs that are already iconic in the band discography such as Gunga Din, their first single or the sweet ballad Anthem for Doomed Youth. Personally, my heart also beats for Fury Of Chonburi and Belly of The Beast.

Personnellement mon cœur a aussi penché pour Fury Of Chonburi et Belly Of The Beast

Carole's top 5:

Around The World and Back: State Champs

This is definitely a band I’ve fallen in love with this year and this album enhance my love for them. Losing Myself has been played on repeat.

Cry Baby: Melanie Martinez

This is the second artist I’ve fallen in love with. Do I need to explain why I love the album’s atmosphere? My love for Alice in Wonderland took over me with Mad Hatter.

1989: Ryan Adams

I love Taylor Swift and 1989. These are amazing covers of the songs. Don’t make me chose a song, please.

J’adore Taylor Swift et 1989. Ce sont de superbes reinterpretations des chansons. Point final.

That's The Spirit: Bring Me The Horizon

I am not a fan of their previous albums, but I just can’t stop listening to this one. Ollie did a great work on his voice. My favorites are either Follow You or Blasphemy.

Oh Wonder: Oh Wonder

Last but not least, we can only love the sweetness of the two voices mixed together. Social mention for Technicolor Beat.

Noura's top 5:

Carrie and Lowell: Sujfan Stevens

This is THE masterpiece of the year. An album full of childhood memories where despair is mixed to hope. The first time I heard the album I wanted to cry, but mostly I had this urge to just relax, enjoy the state where I was at knowing the path I took. And maybe that's what Carrie And Lowell is all about: a reflection about your path. I do recommend to listen to this album after an exhausting day, while taking a long warm bath with one (or two) glass of wine. Thank me later.

No Cities To Love- Sleather Kinney

After ten years, Sleather Kinney finally released an album this year and, as expected it's monumental. Heavy, and punky sounds with death, boredom and self respect among subjects they tackle. An album that will find you bumping your head to every track. If you ever have the urge to do something vicious this is the best record to do it on.

My Love Is Cool- Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice is probably the band of the year. Their first song, released in 2012, Leaving You was part of the NME's Radar' section, three years later they are nominated for the NME Awards in 6 categories as well as a nomination for the 2016 Grammy Awards in Best Rock Performance. Quite a long way to go, but when you listen to their first album My Love Is Cool it is more than understandable. Going from haunting tracks such as Bros to more grungy beats in Giant PeachMy Love Is Cool is the kind of album that will keep you hooked from start to finish, trying to figure out how songs can be so different and yet have all the same feel within them.

Art Angels-Grimes

This is the only pop album in my top 5 (the indie kid in me is way too powerful), but to be completely honest this album is what connects Pop to the underground. If you mixed Taylor Swift with a weird psychedelic band, you'll probably get something close to Grimes. Grimes challenges you in every song, and every song is a little closer to the perfect pop song.

Thank Your Lucky Star-Beach House

It's a surprise album released only two months after Depression Cherry and you know what I think you should just check it out and be surprised. Just an advice though, go on a walk, stare at strangers, and think about life, you already have the soundtrack in your headphones.
