Bo Bingen + Wolf Alice +The Districts + The Fat White Family @ Inrocks Festival
Vendredi soir à Paris des personnes sont mortes en assistant à un concert. Ces personnes étaient réunies par leur amour de la musique, elles chantaient probablement très fort et étaient heureuses d’être réunies un vendredi soir pour voir un groupe qu’elles aimaient.
Samedi j’avais rendez-vous à Nantes au Stéréolux pour l’Inrocks festival en compagnie d’artistes que j’adore, que j’admire.
Le premier concert débute aux alentours de 20h10 mais je n’y suis pas avant 20h30. J’assiste donc qu’à la moitié du set du seul groupe que je ne connaissais pas : Bo Ningen. Je découvre 4 rockeurs d’origine japonaise, passionnés par ce qu’ils font à tel point qu’on a l’impression que la chanteuse et bassiste est en transe. Cependant, malgré l’énergie du groupe sur scène, ils n’ont pas réussi à me convaincre. Chacun sa tasse de thé. Ils n’étaient pas la mienne.
Une petite demi-heure plus tard c’est au tour de Wolf Alice de faire son entrée sur scène. Le groupe anglais est la raison principale de notre venue. Je les suis depuis presque un an et après les avoir loupé à Rock En Seine, j’était plus qu’excitée à l’idée d’enfin les voir en live. Le groupe commence avec You Loves Whore une chanson qui ne fait pas partie de mes préférées mais qui rend très bien en live. Le groupe continue avec des chansons issues de leur premier opus : Lisbon, Bros, la plus énergique You’re a Germ ou encore Giant Peach mais aussi d’autres venant de leurs EP comme Moaning Lisa Smile. Wolf Alice nous a livré une très belle performance, très énergique mais l’on regrette un peu que le public n’ai pas suivit. Ce manque d’alchimie entre le groupe et le public est quelque chose qu’un groupe comme Wolf Alice devrait savoir résoudre.

The Ditricts est le 3eme groupe à passer. Il est désormais plus de 22h et le public se rapproche de plus en plus de la scène. Les 4 membres du groupe américain ouvrent leur set avec Chlorine, une chanson qui reflète très bien l’univers du groupe : des guitares dans le fond mais surtout le plus important, la voix hypnotique et cassé de Rob, le chanteur principal. Heavy Bugs, Hounds, Peaches, la très belle Long Distance ainsi que quelques autres chansons viennent ensuite. Leur set est presque finit, en fait il ne leur reste que deux chansons. Pat (le guitariste) nous parle un peu des attentats parisiens de la veille (le groupe jouait également sur Paris ce soir-là), nous informans qu’ils vont jouer 6AM en hommage. C’était de loin le meilleur moment de la soirée : Rob chantait tout seul avec sa guitare, sans autres artifices, sa voix puissante m’a donné des frissons que je ne suis pas prête d’oublier. Le reste du groupe revient après une performance épique de presque 6 minutes, pour jouer leur dernière chanson : Young Blood. Leur concert fait définitivement parti des meilleurs que j’ai pu voir cette année et je pense que toutes les personnes présentes dans la salle ce soir là ont le même sentiment.
Ma soirée se termine avec Fat White Family, le 4e et dernier groupe. Après 20 minutes supplémentaires d’attentes le groupe arrive enfin. Je ne connaissais pas grand choses sur eux, ayant seulement écouté leur album. J’ai découvert un groupe totalement disjoncté avec une énergie éléctrique. Et j’ai aimé ça, tout comme le reste de la salle. Le chanteur était totalement dépravé , même si il n’a certainement pas assuré la performance vocale de l’année, il jubilait sur scène captivant son audience, tel un magicien. Malgré le fait que certains ont finit recouvert de Guinness et que je n’étais pas au meilleur de forme, j’ai tout de même passé un très bon moment aux côtés de ces six anglais un peu beaucoup bizarre.

Friday night in Paris some people died while attending a gig. Those people were reunited for their love of music, they were probably singing very loudly, happy to be reunited to see a band they love.
Saturday, I went to the Inrocks festival in Nantes at the Stereolux to see bands that I love, that I admire.
The first show started around 8.10 pm but I didn’t get there until 8.30pm. I wasn’t there for the whole set of the only band I haven’t heard of: Bo Ningen. I discovered four Japanese rockers, so passionate their singer and bassist seemed to be in trance. However, despite the energy of the band on stage I wasn’t convinced by the band. Some people enjoyed it, some didn’t. I was part of the later.
Half an hour later, it’s time for Wolf Alice to get on stage. The British band is why I’m here in the first place. I’ve been following them for about a year or so and after missing them at Rock En Seine last summer, I was more than excited to see them live. The group starts his set with You Loves Whore, a song which isn’t one of my favorites but is still really good live. A lot of songs from their first album such as Lisbon, Bros, the very energetic You’re Germ or even Giant Peach but also songs from their EPs like Moaning Lisa Smile, are following. The band delivers an impressive and energized performance, unfortunately the public wasn’t into it. This lack of alchemy between the band and the public is something that a band such as Wolf Alice should be aware of, and capable of turning it around.
Fat White Family
The Districts is the third band of the night. It’s over 10 pm and people are getting closer to the stage. The four piece American band is opening his set with Chlorine, a nice song which reflects perfectly the universe of the band: some guitars in the background with the hypnotic and broken voice of Rob, leading the song. Heavy Begs, Hounds, Peaches but also the very beautiful Long Distance are following with a few others. The set is almost over, actually there is only 2 more songs left. Pat (the guitarist) is talking a bit about the attacks that happened the night before –they were also playing in Paris that night- telling us that they’re going to play 6AM as a tribute. This was by far the best part of the night: Rob had only his guitar, and his powerful voice. The rest of the band joined him after about 6 minutes of an epic performance, that I’ll never forget, to play one last song: Young Blood. Their performance was by far the best of the night, they’re definitely one of the best act I’ve seen this year and I think that everyone who was there that night can agree with me.
My night ended with Fat White Family, the fourth and last band. After 20 extra minutes waiting for them, they finally came on stage. I didn’t know much about them – I only listened to their last album a few times- and I discovered an electric and totally disjointed band. I actually liked it, and so did the rest of the audience. The singer was totally depraved and even thought he doesn’t have the best vocals, he was juggling on stage, captivating his audience. Despite the fact that some of us ended up covered with Guinness and that I wasn’t at my best to enjoy the show, I sill spent a good time with this six weird Births.
