MEET ME AT THE MELT #1 : Florence + The Machine
Quand tu es passionnée par la musique, n’importe quel groupe peut t’impressionner, te transporter, te faire ressentir des choses que tu avais enfouilles au plus profond de toi – mais au fond de toi, il y a toujours the one. Ce groupe qui t’as accompagné depuis des années, et continue d’être le soundtrack de ta vie. Pour moi, ce groupe, c’est Florence + The Machine. Depuis que je suis ado, la voix de Florence Welch fait partie de ma vie. Les moments les plus marquants de mes bientôt 10 dernières années ont été passés au son de ses mélodies. Chacun de ses albums montre une évolution dans sa carrière, et dans ma vie. Ils m’accompagnent, grandissent à mes côtés.
Le dernier album de FATM, High As Hope, est disponible partout depuis le 29 juin de cette année. Avec Sky Full Of Song et Hunger, les deux singles de l’album, nous avions déjà compris que cet album était tel un retour aux bases de Florence + The Machine. Des sons plus graves, des paroles plus mythologiques, et des mélodies féeriques. Pour moi, c’est un des albums les mieux élaborés du groupe. Même pas un mois plus tard, Florence + The Machine sont le grand nom du festival Melt. Il s’agit de seulement la deuxième date du groupe après la sortie de l’album. On se prépare pour un spectacle intense, et intime – et nous ne sommes pas déçus.
Il y a une énergie dans l'air. Cela fait bientôt deux ans que nous ne voyons plus Florence et son groupe sur scène. Ce retour est très attendu, par tous. Le public est prêt à la voir sortir à tout moment.. et la voilà. En rose pale dans une robe délicate, les cheveux au vent, sa voix forte comme dans nos souvenirs. Il y a comme un besoin urgent de retenir tous les details. Les nouvelles images de fond, les nouveaux musiciens, les nouveaux sons. Il faut tout retenir, de peur qu'elle reparte pendant 5 ans, comme elle l'a fait autrefois. La foule connait déjà même les paroles les plus récentes. L’énergie est électrique dans l'air.
Florence est visiblement à l'aise. Le public est là pour elle, mais elle continue de tout donner comme si elle devait encore faire ses preuves. Elle partage beaucoup, sur la création, sur les réseaux sociaux, sur sa famille et Patti Smith - qui inspira Patricia, une des chansons du nouvel album qu'elle chantera ce soir là. La setlist est merveilleusement balancée. C'est un voyage dans le temps. Je me rappelle de toutes les fois où j'ai écouté ces chansons dans ma chambre, dans ma voiture, dans les transports. Et la voilà, grandiose, en face de moi.
Toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin. Nous avons droit à un encore que personne n'attendais forcément. Florence et son groupe reviennent avec Big God, le titre de l'album qui ressort le plus par sa différence, mais qui marque le plus. Et la dernière note sonne, dans l'air, pendant un long moment, comme si elle était suspendue dans le temps. Le public retient son souffle. Florence a tout donné. Le concert est exceptionnel. Il est presque 2h du matin, et pourtant l'adrénaline n'a jamais été aussi forte. Le rideau tombe, allégoriquement.
This summer, CrossMusics had the privilege of being invited to the Melt Festival. The Melt is a big institution when we talk about summer festivals. It takes place every year in mid-July in Ferropolis - the iron city - in Germany. The stages of this festival have welcomed the biggest names, and the smallest groups early in their career. Meet me at the Melt is a small series of articles that we prepared to talk you through in detail about these few days of total freedom. And it starts strong, with an exclusive article on Florence + The Machine, the headliner of the first day, and especially a very important artist for one of us. (Alex advises you to put High As Hope in the background while reading this article, to get you in the mood.)
When you're passionate about music, any band can impress you, transport you, make you feel things you've been burying deep within you - but deep inside you, there's always the one. This group who has accompanied you for years, and continues to be the soundtrack of your life. For me, this band is Florence + The Machine. Since I was a teenager, the voice of Florence Welch has been part of my life. The most memorable moments of the passed10 years have been to the sound of her melodies. Each of her albums shows an evolution in her career, and in my life. They accompany me, grow by my side.
FATM's latest album, High As Hope, is available everywhere since June 29 of this year. With Sky Full Of Song and Hunger, the two singles of the album, we already understood that this album was a comeback to the very basics of Florence + The Machine. More serious sounds, more mythological lyrics, and fairy tunes. For me, it's one of the best-made albums of the band, and of this year. Not even a month later, Florence + The Machine is set to be the big name of the Melt festival. This is only the second show of the group after the release of the album. We are prepared for an intense and intimate show - and we were not disappointed.
There is energy in the air. It's been almost two years since we last saw Florence and her band on stage. This return is highly anticipated by evryone. And here she is. In a delicate light pink dress, hair in the wind, her voice as strong as in our memories. There is an urgent need to remember all the details. New background images, new musicians, new sounds. We must remember everything, lest she leave for 5 years, as she did in the past. The crowd already knows even the most recent lyrics. The energy is electric in the air.
Florence is visibly comfortable. The public is there for her, but she continues to give everything as if she still had to prove herself. She shares a lot about creation, social media, about her family and Patti Smith - who inspired Patricia, one of the songs from the new album she will sing that night. The setlist is wonderfully balanced. It's a journey back in time. I remember all the times I listened to these songs in my room, in my car, in transport. And here it is, grandiose, in front of me.
All good things come to an end. And yet she comes back with an encore no one was necessarily waiting for. Florence and her band come back with Big God, the title of the album which stands out the most by its difference, but which marks you the most. And as the last note rings, it says in the air, for a long moment, as if it were suspended in time. The audience holds their breath. Florence gave everything. The concert is exceptional. It's almost 2am, yet adrenaline has never been so strong. The curtain falls, allegorically.
