Men I Trust + Tess Roby au Groom à Lyon

Lyon. 10 octobre 2018. C’est vers un Groom (une toute petite salle de concert + bar bien sympa) plein à craquer que je me dirige. Au programme: une soirée 100% québécoise. À l’affiche: Men I Trust et Tess Roby, un groupe et une artiste basé.e.s à Montréal. Évidemment, en voyant cette programmation tout droit venue de ma ville natale, je me suis précipitée à leur rencontre.

Le concert est complet et, en attendant la confirmation de ma place sur la guestlist, je vois défiler devant moi une bonne dizaine de mines dépitées repartir bredouilles, ayant eu l’espoir de pouvoir acheter un billet à la dernière minute. Believe the hype: cet attroupement était justifié. En effet, les deux sets ont su ravir le public du Groom ce soir là.

Un peu avant 21h, Tess Roby arrive sur scène. Tout de noir vêtue (à part ses chaussures à semelles orange flamboyant), elle s’installe derrière son clavier, accompagnée par son frère Eliot à la guitare. Elle ouvre la soirée avec l’incroyable Catalyst. Entre Plasticine Hills et l'ensorcelant Tripling, Tess interprète plus au moins tous les morceaux de son album Beacon, sorti chez Italians Do It Better. Elle nous offre également un mystérieux nouveau morceau, qui n’a pas encore de nom. En bref, la chanteuse a su chauffer la salle avec douceur et volupté, et le public en voulait encore. Cependant, malgré les demandes de ce dernier, elle a suivi sa setlist et n’a pas interprété d’autres chansons. Mais toutes les bonnes choses ont une fin!

Quelques temps après le départ de Tess, c’est au tour de Men I Trust de venir prendre place sur la scène du Groom. Le trio (composé d’Emma, Jessy et Dragos, accompagné•e•s d’Éric, leur batteur sur cette tournée) commence par interpréter Break For Lovers. Avec le sourire aux lèvres et une bonne humeur communicative, le groupe séduit le public. En effet, toute la salle danse, chante et semble passer une excellente soirée. Heureux•ses de pouvoir parler français après une tournée dans des pays pas forcément francophones, les musicien•ne•s intéragissent pas mal avec le public, notamment lors d’un problème technique… Effectivement, vers la fin du spectacle, les machines pètent un peu les plombs et les hauts-parleurs ne diffusent plus le son des micros et des instruments. En attendant que le problème soit réglé, les membres du groupe décident de discuter avec l’audience, façon Q&A. Emma en profite pour répondre à une question sur son projet solo Bernache, qui devrait reprendre bientôt. Une fois les difficultés techniques résolues, le concert reprend de plus belle d’une seule traite: pas d’encore, mais le groupe aura tout de même joué une quinzaine de chanson ce soir là (dont des classiques tels que Lauren, Show Me How et Seven ainsi que 3 unreleased). Après leur départ, ils donnent rendez-vous à la foule au fond de la salle afin de discuter un peu pour clôturer la soirée en beauté. 

En bref, les québécois•es nous ont offert un excellent concert ce soir là. Merci à elles et eux!

Lyon, October 10th. I’m headed to the Groom (a tiny venue who also happens to be a cool bar), which was completely packed that night. Indeed, a lot of people showed up to see Men I Trust and Tess Roby, 2 Quebecois artists/band. Obviously, I had to go: Montreal is my hometown, and that’s also where they’re from. I couldn’t miss it! 

The show was completely sold-out and, while i was waiting for confirmation about my spot on the guestlist, I saw a lot of disappointed people hoping to get their hands on some last-minute tickets leave empty-handed. Believe the hype: the show was sold out for a reason. Indeed, both acts killed it that night.

Around 9PM, Tess Roby gets on stage. Wearing an all-black outfit (except for her rad flashy orange sneakers), she says hi and gets behind the keys. She is not alone: her guitar player (and brother) Eliot is right next to her. She starts her set with the incredible Catalyst, and the audience digs it. The haunting Tripling really made us feel like the world stopped turning for a second, which was a wonderful feeling. Her beautiful and delicate voice got everyone's attention, and the whole room seemed impressed. If they didn't know her before the show, it's safe to say that they'll never forget her name after that experience. Tess performed pretty much every song on her debut album, Beacon (Italians Do It Better, 2018). She also sang a new song, who remains untitled at the moment. Tess gave us an amazing performance, and the audience obviously wanted more: they asked for another song. However, Tess and Eliot stuck to their setlist and did not perform other songs. But all good things must come to an end!

A few moments later, it’s time for Men I Trust to join the Groom’s stage. The trio (Emma, Jessy and Dragos + Éric, their tour drummer) started with Break For Lovers. The band and their positive energy really managed to seduce the audience: everyone was singing, dancing and obviously having a good time. Happy to be able to speak french after touring in foreign countries, Men I Trust interacted quite a bit with the audience, especially when they had to wait for the sound engineer to fix a technical problem. During this unplanned Q&A, we learned that Bernache, Emma’s solo project, would be releasing new music soon. Once the speakers started working again, the band ended their set nicely. No encore, but they performed about 15 songs that night (including hits like Lauren, Show Me How, Seven and 3 unreleased songs.). After they left the stage, they told everyone to meet them at the back of the venue and have a chat. What a nice way to end such a beautiful night! 

As always, Quebec came through and we can’t wait to see all of them again. Thanks guys!
