Oscar x Gengahr @ Le Point Ephémère 23/10/2015
Vendredi soir au point éphémère Gengahr jouaient leur premier concert en tant que tête d’affiche en France.
C’est Oscar, un jeune mais talentueux londonien qui faisait la 1ère partie du groupe. On ne connaissait de lui que sa chanson Breaking My Phone mais on avait entendu que du bien du reste. Son set commence par Told Me So et Feel it too, 2 chansons qui nous ont laissées très dubitatives face à l’artiste. Vient ensuite Good Things et cette fois, malgré le fait qu’on avait du mal à entendre les paroles, Oscar m’a totalement captivée. Vient ensuite Beautiful Words et Breaking My Phone, 2 chansons déjà disponibles sur le net qui sont encore mieux en livre. Il finit son set par Stay, Daffodil Days et Sometimes. Pour conclure je dirais que le set d’Oscar était une très bonne partie pour Gengahr et malgré les problèmes de son, le Londonien nous a totalement convaincus.

Sur le coup je vais être un peu moins objective. J’adore Gengahr. Ça m’aura pris du temps d’aimer ces 4 anglais mais ça m’a aussi permis de m’attarder sur leur musique et de la découvrir plus en profondeur.
Il est 21 :30, la salle n'est pas pleine à craquer mais quand même bien remplie, Felix, John, Danny et Hugh entrent sur scène. Ils commencent par Dizzy Ghosts, la chanson qui ouvre également leur album et qui ne pourrait être une meilleure chanson pour nous introduire dans leur univers. La voix du chanteur, déjà surprenante, est encore plus intrigante en live. Heroin, qui est une de leur chanson la plus écoutée sur Spotify, et Where I lie suivent et nous font entrer petit à petit dans l’univers de Gengahr. Bathed in light est jouée mais est vite suivie par Tired Eyes, une chanson issue de leur dernier EP sorti il y a quelques semaines. Le public est tout de même réceptif à cette nouvelle chanson, à ma plus grande surprise. L’ambiance revient plus posée sur Embers et Dark Stars malgré le fait que le groupe est à fond. John, le guitariste, n’arrête pas de bouger tout en jouant et Hugh, le bassiste est dans le même état. Ils finissent une première fois leur set sur Powder tout en remerciant le public pour ce concert. Ils reviennent pour jouer tout d’abord Shark et livrent pour moi, une de leur meilleure prestation de la soirée. La chanson commence juste avec la voix envoutante de Felix et des quelques accords sortant de sa guitare. Le reste du groupe va se joindre un lui pour livrer une très belle performance. Ils clôturent définitivement leur set sur She’s A Witch en prévenant qu’ils seront disponibles à la fin du concert pour parler et en laissant un très bon souvenir à leurs fans présents dans la salle.
Ce concert est pour moi un des meilleurs concerts auquel j’ai pu assister cette année. Je ne m’attendais vraiment pas à ce que le groupe soit aussi à fond et joue avec autant de passion. C’était une très belle surprise dont je me souviendrais pendant longtemps.

Le groupe est actuellement en tournée en Europe. Ils repassent en France à Lille le 11 Novembre, à Amiens le 12 Novembre et à Lorient le 14.

Last Friday night , at « Le Point Ephémère », Gengahr played their first gig as headliner in France.
It’s Oscar, a young but talented Londoner who was opening the 4 piece band. We only knew from him his song Breaking My Phone but we heard that he was really good. His set began with Told Me So et Feel it Too, 2 songs that left us really doubtful facing the artist. Then he sang Good Things and this time, even if we could barely hear the lyrics, Oscar totally convinced me. Then he played Beautiful Words and Breaking My Phone, 2 songs that are available on the internet and which sound even better live. He finished is set with Stay, Daffodil Days and Sometimes. To conclude, Oscar’s set was a really good opening for Gengahr, and in spite of all the sound’s problems, the Londoner totally convinced us.

This time I’m gonna be less objective. I love Gengahr. I took me some time to love this 4 British boys, but it also allowed me to linger on their music and to discover it in a deeper way.
It’s 21:30, the hall isn’t sold out, but still quite full, Felix, John, Danny and Hugh are coming on stage. They start with Dizzy Ghosts, the song that is also opening their album and which actually couldn’t be a better song to introduce us to their universe. The singer’s voice, which is already surprising, is even more intriguing in live. Heroin, which is one of their most heard songs on Spotify, and Where I Lie are following and are introducing us slowly in Gengahr’s universe. Bathed In Light is played next, but quickly followed by Tired Eyes, a song from their last EP, which has been out since a few weeks only. The public is still quite reactive to this new song, to my surprise. The atmosphere becomes again more quiet on Embers and Dark Stars in spite of the fact that the band is whole-heartedly in their set. John, the guitarist, can’t stop moving while playing perfectly and Hugh, the bassist, is in exactly the same condition. They finish a first time their set on Powder while thanking the audience for the show. They come back to play first Shark and deliver for me their best performance of the night. The song begins with only Felix’s intriguing voice and some chords from his guitar. The rest of the band is joining him a few seconds later to deliver a magnificent performance of the song. They definitely end their set on She’s A Witch by warning us that they’ll be available for a talking session after the show and by leaving a really good memory of their show to their fans in the room.
This show was for me one of the best I attended of this year. I didn’t expect that the band would be so whole-heartedly in their performance and play with so much passion. It’s a really good surprise and I’ll remember their show for a very long time.
