Sisteray Interview
‘As
a band we want to stand for all those who don't get heard standing alone.’
Sisteray are a mix between The Buzzcocks, The
Libertines and a tiny bit of The Smiths. They are the new indie band to follow
and we got the opportunity to interview them before they become the next big
thing. We asked them a bit about their back-story and how they came together. Daniel
Connolly (lead guitar, vocals) and his brother Ryan (drums) wanted to form a
band, they contacted Niall Rowan (lead vocals, rhythm guitar). Mike the bassist
was the last one to join the band, he recalls ‘2 weeks before their first gig they called me […] I could play guitar
but I had never picked up a bass. I borrowed one from a mate and the
first gig went ahead.’ Eventually, Ryan decided to go to university and Marco
their new drummer came all the way from Italia to replace Ryan.
‘The
rest is history. The day Marco joined the band we knew Sisteray had been born.’
As many others before them, Sisteray picked up their instruments and
passion thanks to their influences, which go from The Smiths to The Gun Club.
However, as a band what drives them is to be a voice, and ‘use the music as a
platform to get the views of thousands across.’ In No Escape they sing, “From
the top to the bottom, well I’ve seen it all. From the street, there’s no
escape”, they are singing the UK they have experienced, ‘we see the things that
go on around us, particularly in London, but across the country too.’
Sisteray may be a budding band but they already worked with Rory Atwell,
producer for The Vaccines and Palma Violets. Their collaboration took place in
Atwell’s studio, a ship on the Thames ‘which would constantly sway while you
played’. The band knew they made the right choice from day one, describing
their experience with the producer as ‘brilliant. The new singles sound exactly
how we imagined them too.’ The Band as hopes to work with many others, from
producers to engineers, ‘the trick is finding the people that are as interested
in you as you are of them, that way you know you will get the best of the
best.’
As it was near the end of 2015, ‘Album of the year’ lists were popping
up all over the Internet, we asked the band their favorite tracks and albums of
2015. They saw 2015 as a ‘great one for guitar music’; with bands that may
actually bring back the excitement in indie and punk it seemed to lack this
past few years. The ones who stood out for Sisteray were Wolf Alice and their
debut album “My Love Is Cool”. “Key Markets” by Sleaford Mods, which according
to the band shows how only two people can come out with ‘absolute bangers’, and
“Are You Satisfied’ by Slaves. Funnily enough Kendrick Lamar “To Pimp a Butterfly” was also mentioned.
Who says end of the year, says beginning
of a new one. The London based band, are more than thrilled to see what Manchester
band, Blossoms have to offer, as well as girl band Hinds, which they plan on
seeing live. Rumor has it 50 cent has a new album coming up, which ‘should be
something worth listening too’.
However, the band they are the most eager about is themselves, with 2
double A side singles coming up soon, “A
wise man/ Back To Yours”, and maybe an album later in the year but no promises
are made!
